“Munasara” Magazine is a culmination and consolidation of years of documenting and analyzing human rights issues in “Muwatin” - Mohammed Al-Fazari

Since its establishment as an independent media organization, Muwatin has relied on various pillars to fulfill its journalistic mission, with human rights issues being one of the most important. With this in mind, Muwatin decided to launch its new project, Munasara Magazine, with the first issue’s theme focusing on one of the most crucial issues for women in the Arab world: the right to pass their nationality on to their spouses and children on an equal basis with men.

In countries that do not give women the right to pass on their nationality to their children on an equal footing with men – those thatdiscriminate on the basis of sex– the concept of family identity is only tied to men. This is not surprising, as it is a natural result of the social reality in which masculinity is deeply rooted, not only in traditions and customs, but also in religious beliefs and interpretations. This reality certainly does not align with the desired state of citizenship, in which all citizens, regardless of their sex, religious and ethnic backgrounds, are equal in rights and opportunities. Unfortunately, there are still 24 countries in the world that deny women the right to pass on their nationality to their children on an equal footing with men, and more than half of these countries are Arab countries.

“Munasara” Magazine represents the culmination of years of documentation and analysis of human rights issues in “Muwatin”. It also serves as a consolidation of these efforts, forming a more cohesive project that aligns with the vision and strategy of the “Muwatin” team. This magazine is the first of its kind in the Arab world, combining human rights work and journalism, with human rights at its core and journalism as a tool and force for positive change. Through the collaboration of individuals and institutions in journalism and human rights fields, as well as affected individuals and decision-makers in the region, this magazine aims to bring about positive change. It’s important to note that each issue of the magazine is not the culmination of the project but rather the beginning of the project, acting as a launching point for focused and diverse advocacy campaigns that will continue for several months.

Through this “Munasara” first edition, which was contributed to by many journalists, writers, human rights activists, and affected individuals in partnership with the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights, we hope to contribute, even if only by a drop, to the sea of efforts being made on this issue. Gender equality is more than just a goal in and of itself; it is a prerequisite for building good governance and a just citizenship. It is also essential to reducing poverty and obstacles to education, healthcare, and freedom of movement, among many other hardships faced by individuals suffering as a result of gender discrimination in nationality laws, including difficulties in obtaining birth certificates, identity and travel documents  – and the fundamental right to nationality itself!
